Pet Microchipping

At Seneca Animal Hospital, we are happy to offer microchips. Every year, thousands and thousands of pets go missing. Not knowing where your pet is or how to bring them back home can be a helpless, hopeless feeling.

But there is a simple, safe, and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should it ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip underneath your pet’s fur. It is a painless and relatively fast procedure and is entirely safe.

Microchipping is common for young puppies and kittens, but you should think about it even if your pet is an adult. If you’re relying on other types of identification, you could be putting your pet in danger; even indoor pets can mistakenly venture outside and become lost. Microchipping is a safe, efficient technique to ensure your pet’s return in the event of the unthinkable.

Why microchip your pet?

The microchip is registered with your pet’s vital information and can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter so that they can return your pet directly to you. If your pet goes missing, the first thing a person does is take them to a vet clinic or shelter to have them scanned for a microchip. When that number is found and looked up, your information will contact you and get your pet back home as soon as possible.

The average return-to-owner rates for the shelters were 2.4 times higher for dogs with a microchip than all stray dogs (52.2% vs. 21.9%) and 21.4 times higher for cats with a microchip than all stray cats (38.5% vs. 1.8%).

The main reasons that owners weren’t found included incorrect or disconnected phone numbers, owners’ failure to return phone calls, and unregistered microchips. At Seneca Animal Hospital, we use PetLink microchips. If you need clarification on whether your pet’s microchip is registered, who it’s registered to, or if your information is correct, enter their number here.

Save yourself the heartache and stress of a lost pet. Microchips bring pets home.
